HWWK RESPONDS TO BOMB BLAST IN DOWNTOWN NAIROBI
The HOPE worldwide Kenya blood team
The following was highlighted on the HOPE worldwide website, www.hopeww.org
Monday, June 11, 2007 - Today, a bomb exploded in downtown Nairobi, Kenya killing two and injuring 30 others. To view the story, follow this link: http://www.cnn.com/2007/WORLD/africa/06/11/kenya.blast.ap/index.html. We are deeply saddened by this situation. This incident occurred far from the location of the HOPE worldwide Volunteer Corps/HOPE Youth Corps (HVC/HYC) and the HOPE worldwide team serving in that country. We are grateful that all of our team is safe. Please pray for the victims and their families.
At the present time, there are 37 HVC/HYC volunteers from the United States serving the poor in Kenya. They are serving those suffering from the devastation of HIV/AIDS - following Christ's example of service. Please join us in a prayer of gratitude to God for their hearts and lives. Continue to remember them in prayer as they return back to the U.S. on June 20th.
From Nairobi we are able and grateful to add:
The following was written on page 5 of the Kenya national daily newspaper, The Daily Nation, on Tuesday 12 June 2007, the day after the bomb exploded in downtown Nairobi, in recognition of the response by HWWK to the urgent need for blood as a result of the explosion:
Officers from HOPE worldwide Kenya were recalled from their homes to coordinate blood donation.
'We had taken some time off, but then were recalled and set up the camp,' says Mr. Wycliffe Mbimwa.
At the bomb blast site, there was a long queue as well-wishers answered an appeal to donate blood to save the lives of those who were injured.
Due to a delay in the arrival of funds for the HWWK blood program, the officers had been away from work for a number of days. In response to the bomb blast, then officers willingly re-engaged in order to help save lives, for no pay at all, as the funds were still not forthcoming at the time. This is the true heart of a servant. We are also excited to anounce that the funds are now available and the daily work of the HWK blood program is set to continue as lives are saved and changed.
